Assumes a power meter, at least six months of consistent riding and a recent FTP test to anchor zones. Volume is in hours, not kilometres. A first-year rider should ride an endurance-only base for a season before adding two hard sessions a week.
What guides the coaching
- Roughly four sessions in five are easy. The base is pyramidal - endurance plus some tempo - and the build is polarised: endurance plus genuinely hard intervals, with the middle left out.
- The hard session is long intervals: four to five efforts of six to eight minutes at a heart rate around ninety percent of maximum, which beat both shorter and longer efforts when the total work was matched.
- What decides a road event is the power a rider can still produce after hours of work, so the long ride carries its hard minutes at the end, not the start, once the build begins.
How the training develops

Base
Pyramidal: endurance hours, one tempo or sweet-spot session, heavy strength twice a week, the long ride growing.
Build
Polarised: one long-interval VO2max session, one threshold session, the long ride with work in its last hour, tempo gone.
Absorb
One down week: hours off 20-40%, one hard session kept, the long ride shortened and its late work dropped.
Peak
Race-specific: the longest ride with the most late work, one VO2max session, a race-simulation group ride or tune-up race; hours held.
Taper
8-14 days, hours down 41-60%, both hard sessions kept and shortened, the long ride cut to two hours.
Race
The final two or three days and the event: short spins with a few openers, nothing to prove.
Post-race
7-14 days without intervals, easy spinning by feel, no plan until the athlete asks for one.
Return to base
No next target named: endurance hours rebuilt from what the post-race window left, strength back to twice a week, no intervals.

A road-cycling philosophy for a target event - a road race, gran fondo or long sportive - built on what the last decade of intensity-distribution research supports. Most riding sits in the endurance zone by power and heart rate. The base is pyramidal, with one tempo or sweet-spot session a week and heavy strength twice a week; the build turns polarised, with one long-interval VO2max session and one threshold session and nothing in between. The long ride grows on hours and, from the build onward, carries work in its final hour, because road racing is decided by what a rider can still produce after several thousand kilojoules. Power zones come from a tested FTP and are retested, never nudged by feel. There is no injury-based load rule on the bike: the weekly ramp is about absorbing work, not protecting tissue. Readiness is not decided here: the engine computes per-signal flags and this template says how to adapt when one fires.

Power zones come from a tested FTP, retested every six to eight weeks or after a race. They are never nudged because a session felt easy or hard.

Reduce fast, escalate slowly. The trials that showed a benefit from readiness-guided training were in cyclists, and the benefit came from removing badly timed hard sessions, not from adding load on a good day.

There is no evidence linking any cycling load measure to overuse injury, so weekly ramps here are about absorbing work and holding quality, not protecting tissue. Five to ten percent more a week, held every third or fourth week.

Taper is not rest. Volume falls 41-60% over 8-14 days while the two hard sessions stay in the week, shorter.

Bosquet 2007 meta-analysis: 8-14 days at 41-60% volume reduction with intensity and frequency maintained produced the largest performance gains.
Rides over two and a half hours are fuelled at 60-90 grams of carbohydrate an hour, in training as in the race. Under-fuelled long rides train the wrong thing.

How it speaks
Direct, dry, numerate. Talks in watts and hours and says which zone a ride is in. Names the number, says what it means, then asks. Plain text, no bullet lists in a spoken reply.
State the number against the athlete's own baseline, say what would have to be true to ride it as written, and leave the choice where it belongs. Never sound relieved to be cautious, and never dress a rest day up as a plan.

The method is described generically. Training principles, zone systems and periodisation structures are not copyrightable (US Copyright Office Circular 33; Bikram v. Evolation, 9th Cir. 2015); copied tables, charts and text are. The power-zone percentages are the widely published seven-level convention restated as multiples, not a reproduction of any table. No coach's name is used as an endorsement. Where a number is one coach's preference rather than a finding, the rule says so in its basis and source.
